Caia Park Community Festival
Held 17th August 2011 at Bala Road Fields, Caia Park

The main aim was to develop a local festival that would be an integral part of the community. It would serve a multitude of purposes for all local groups, community organisations and the public sector services by creating meaningful relationships endless opportunities and benefits that strengthen the whole community.

We intended to raise awareness/educate community members on health, environmental, cultural, heritage and community safety issues.

Promote participating organisations and groups and any new programmes.

  • To provide local groups with an opportunity to fundraise for their cause.
  • To celebrate cultural diversity, local history or stories unique to the community.
  • To show appreciation and publicly acknowledge community members and organisations.
To bring people together to build relationships, connect with the community and promote inclusion.

This event aimed to benefit the whole community -  youth, seniors, families and single parents from all walks of life. It was to be held for one day on Wednesday 17th August from 10.00am – 4.00pm to incorporate the school holidays. This would be the first festival of its kind that Caia Park has hosted and its future would be decided upon based on its success.

The festival took place on one of the large recreational spaces known as Bala Road Fields. This area has adequate open space plus a newly constructed play area for the younger children.

Funding for the event
A successful bid was made to the Community Cohesion Fund 2011-2012 for £1000 towards the staging of the event. Additionally Communities First provided some funding from the Events Budget.

Costs included hire of a marquee, refreshments for volunteers, hire of portaloos and purchase of Hi-Vis vests and promotional items.

Activities at the event
A wide range of groups and organizations participated in the event, promoting their service and offering advice and information to local residents. All those who participated confirmed that the event provided an excellent networking opportunity as well as giving them the chance to engage directly to the community.

Communities First would like to thank Cllr Bithell, Lead Member for Recycling, for supporting and attending the event.

Communities First would also like to thank members of the Caia Park Community Safety Group and a large number of volunteers for their help in planning, setting up, running and clearing up after the event.

OWL Scheme

What is OWL?  This is the Online Watch Link  that has recently been launched in Wrexham.  It is a free interactive scheme that enables people to take an active part in Crime Prevention without leaving their home.

It is already in operation in other parts of the country and is highly successful in helping to cut down the incidence of crime.

Caia Park Communities First will actively work with the community on this project so if you would like further information please speak to Sue or Phil on 01978 314094 or go to www.owl.co.uk,

OWL is free and is available now

Wrexham County Borough Council, Trading Standards and Community Safety Partnership, North Wales Police and Caia Park Communities First working with residents to help reduce crime.

We are considering the creation of a COLD CALLING CONTROL ZONE in the Queensway area and also Smithfield area.

Fortunately doorstep crimes are not common, but when they do happen they can be extremely upsetting. Even genuine but uninvited sales calls can be worrying.

Many people who call at your home are genuine, but some may turn up unannounced and try to trick their way into your home. They may even turn up as builders or gardeners and try to get you to pay large amounts of money for unnecessary work.

We would like your help to try to stop this happening by giving you the confidence to say “NO” to uninvited sales people.

As part of this project we would consider putting signs on lamp posts in your road telling people that they are entering an area where residents do not buy goods and services at the door from uninvited sales people.

Please note, this project will only proceed where there have been previous victims of doorstep crime and/or where there is at least 67% agreement from residents in the area.

No Cold Calling Zones have already been introduced in Pontwen and Fenwick Drive.
