Health and Well Being
Caia Park Fruit and Veg Co-op
The availability of affordable, local, good quality fruit and vegetables was highlighted by residents as a problem as the nearest large supermarket is a considerable distance from many areas of the estate. A Food Co-op was the obvious solution and, with the help and support of Debbie Neal from Regeneration Rural Unit the group are up and running successfully, are now selling eggs and are hoping to sell other products such as bedding plants. The Food co op runs every Tuesday morning from Kingsley Circle Community Centre. After a request from Kingsley Circle Management Committee to Wrexham County Borough Council the cost for the centre has now been waived
Bug Busting!
Caia Park Communities First has been working with the Local Health Team to educate children and parents about the treatment and prevention of headlice. They have been into the local primary schools giving advice on how to treat the children without having to use smelly chemicals and at very low cost. Hopefully this will begin to reduce the incidences of these unpleasant bugs in our schools
Cookery Lessons
Cookery Lessons were recently run in Caia Park, but due to lack of funding these classes had to stop. With Healthy Eating and Obesity being a high priority issue in Caia Park, Communities First approached the Local Health Board and put a bid in for £1700 to run some more classes. The bid was successful and with the support of the WEA- Welsh Education Authority- the classes were run on a weekly basis and proved to be very successful. The possibility of further funding is to be investigated with a view to putting on more classes in the future.
Caia Park Health and Well Being Sub Group
As well as the Food Coop and Cookery Lessons, the Caia Park Health and Well Being sub group have been responsible for setting up many projects within Caia Park. The sub group regularly organise and run tea dances which are thoroughly enjoyed by the community. The group are made up almost entirely of volunteers from Caia Park and they meet regularly to discuss the health needs of residents of Caia Park. One of the main projects they are involved with looking at presently is that of the introduction of an Adult Play area. The group are currently seeking funding to install this outdoor exercise area for people of all ages. If successful this will allow parents and grandparents to exercise alongside their children whilst they play in local park. The group have recently visited Damhead in Manchester, where they have seen installation of a similar unit and they have been able to witness the community of Damhead enjoying this facility firsthand.
